Pheasant!
When I left on saturday to drive to Tennessee, I was going down the gravel road at the lake. I saw something on the side of the road and as I drove to take a closer look, this is what I saw.
This pheasant was fat enough to make any pheasant hunter drool with delight! This guy is HUGE! One of the biggest I've ever seen. He let me walk right up to him. I got as close as five feet at one point.
I love to photograph wildlife and I've had many an opportunity to do so lately. I rarely ever get this close though!
Here's a little digital camera video of the guy. The video quality isn't great but you can see him move around a bit.
I also photographed some elk in Minnesota on the same day. They are too far away in the pictures to get a good look at them. Too bad because the bulls have full antlers now and they are huge! Beautiful animals.
As my daughters and I were getting close to Fargo, I went to a buffalo farm in Barnesville, Minnesota. We had fun watching the huge buffalo for a few minutes.
Always fun to watch the critters, big or small!

I've never seen a live pheasant. That one is sure a handsome guy! Bet he's glad he's not under glass, lol.
Since you like photographing critters, you would have had fun in my backyard Monday morning (story in my post). Btw, is opossum an edible animal - 'cause you could have had one in my backyard! LOL
Hope you're having a good week!

That's really cool. It's so amazing you were able to get that close to him. I remember being in Wyoming many years ago where the wildlife are everywhere. It was quite a wonderful sight. I hope all is going well with you and yours!
how can you call him wildlife if you can get that close to him?
@rnjennison - Some animals, just don't fear people as much as others. This guy seemed to know it wasn't hunting season, so he wasn't too bothered by my presence.
cool pix ... i live close to some CRP ground and a year or so ago saw 5 (yes 5) males and 1 hen sauntering through the yard ... another time 2 males sashayed down the middle of the street about a block or so and then turned around and sasheyed back ... and off into the thick grasses ... they are so beautiful ...
@windupherskirt - Those males just love to strut their stuff. I could watch them for hours!
I don't think I've ever seen a pheasant that chubby before! My grandma woulda cooked him right up! LOL
@Still_groovy - Opossum is edible, but I've never tried it. I've had raccoon legs, though...yummy!
@SamsPeeps - It's a good thing I didn't have my pistol with me! It woulda been hard to resist that temptation!
The pheasant I saw was in an aviary - in captivity. There was no excitement except that it was a rare bird. Thanks for these shots.
i'm surprised he could move as fat as he was...wildlife {snort} ...he is clearly somebody's pet....
I've never gotten that close to a pheasant without him flying off! Cool pics!
@tialoca_talks - Yeah right......if he's around in the fall, he'll be somebody's dinner.....mine!!
thats a pretty bird.
I can see it now!!! Flatpick, and the_best_stuff create a wildlife show!! lets get that going. we will be greater than Marty Stoupher! (okay that was just wrong, marty is my hero)
wow! that's big
@the_best_stuff - Yeah....but I bet we could do it!!
he sure is a fat one! we have pheasant all over the place around here ... it's truly incredible how many we have, always on the road sides, darting back into the ditchgrass and fields.
no elk, though, dang it. lots of mule deer, though.
j.
Tastes like chicken
just kidding
that is a great shot -- he would be yummy stuffed and baked
@MsCatbert2You - You got THAT one right, my friend!!
@speraquodvereor - We have muleys in western ND, but none in the eastern part of the state where I'm at. There is the occasional moose in the northeast part of the state.
S'truth, animals are fascinating.
We had a guinea hen that used to hang around this apt. years ago. Don't know what happened to it; but I heard that someone in the neighborhood were keeping them. That one had a way of getting away, I guess.
I love to watch squirrels. I think they are funny.
~~Blessings, prayers 'n cheers
Such a beautiful bird!
Go on.....tell me you weren't tempted to catch it and eat it......
@Neeka1 - Of course I was tempted, my dear! If he's still around in the fall............
.........he's dinner!!
it does seem to make the day special when one has encounters with wildlife. hey! guess what? my neighbor gave me some venison steaks, he got three bucks on his own property last fall!
